GAMES OF POKER
Poker can be played with cards originating from many different decks (poker cards), though it is currently most popular with standard playing cards (such as used in Westerns). Poker hands are based on five-card combinations involving thirteen cards – ten through ace in each suit. One player may receive several combinations while another may receive fewer; depending upon which cards are drawn.
The most basic poker hands rank from high to low:
An unbeatable combination of a ten, a jack, a queen, a king, and an ace of the same suit. A Royal Flush is rare and ranks above all other combinations in value except for one special case.
Five cards in sequential order of the same suit such as 5-6-7-8-9 all of the hearts or Q J 10 9 8 7 all of the diamonds – ranked by the top card then dropping down to the next consecutive card. There can be any number of straights on different suits but only one may exist on a specific suit (no duplicates).
FOUR OF A KIND
All four cards are of the same rank plus any other card. For example, 2 2 2 8 J all of the hearts would be a Four Of A Kind with an eight as a kicker (the 5th card). In non-tournament play, this is considered to be one of the best hands.
Three cards from the same ranking denomination as well as two from another such as Q Q 5 5 3 9 spades which counts as Three Of A Kind + One Pair. In non-tournament play, this hand ranks above a straight flush but below four of a kind.
Any five cards that are all in the same suit – ranked by the top card then dropping down to the next consecutive card. If two or more flushes exist at the same time, that containing the highest top card will win (for example 8 7 5 3 2 is a flush with an eight as its top card and Q J 10 9 8 is another flush with a queen as its top card; the eight would beat out the queen).
